From The Editor
From the Editor:
Happy weekend all and hope your week
was absolutely fantastic.
I have been running around like a
mad woman this week trying to get everything done early so I can take off for
the weekend and most of next week (don't worry I'll be back in time for the
newsletter). An Auntie of my SO died and I'm the only one free enough to
escort my in-laws to the funeral. They are a little frail and hate to have
to travel alone since it's gotten so difficult. So I volunteered to be
their chaperone and lift their totes and ferry them around Kona for a few
days. I'm just hoping that shark-bait like me won't get too burned
up. But I packed my SPF 45 (I bought 50 and then realized the tube was too
big to get it on a plane ha ha) and maybe I'll find just the right kind of
floppy hat that doesn't make me look like a silly tourist.
So I'm leaving on a jet plane later
today and I'll be slightly incommunicado for a few days. But I'd love to
hear from you when I get back. Enjoy the news and do something fun this
weekend!
Cheers All! Amy,

Greetings Dear Ones,
Life certainly has its ups and downs and as a result my energy has been
elsewhere and you have been on my mind.
You see a few weeks back our little dog Nemo had an eye laceration that took
us to the Animal Hospital up in Langhorne, Pa and then into New York City for
eye surgery.
It started out with the Vet in Langhorne suggesting a procedure that would
allow the eye to heal on its own...but I am a firm believer in second opinions
and called my friend in NYC (a vet). He was not happy about what I reported and
called the hospital in NYC. Once we got there it was clear that little
Nemo needed a graft over the perforation in the lens of his eye. Without
that the iris would never return to its original position. Something the
other vet never told us.
Here are some pictures of Nemo's
recovery...;-)

Maryland Zoo euthanizes 22-year-old giraffe - Maryland Zoo
officials say a 22-year-old giraffe suffering from arthritis was euthanized
Saturday. The 14-foot tall giraffe, known as Gretchen, had successfully
been treated for years for a condition that caused her front hooves to rotate
slightly inward. Gretchen also suffered from progressive arthritis, which had
advanced over the past few weeks, and zoo officials said she had begun to show
signs of discomfort. The zoo said treatments including acupuncture were
tried to make Gretchen more comfortable, but her arthritis had become too
advanced.
![]() New certification scheme for TCM - Traditional Chinese
medicine professionals can declare the legitimacy of their products under a new
certification scheme adopted by the federal government. The scheme will be
used to guarantee that products used or sold do not contain ingredients from
threatened species. The scheme was developed jointly by the government and
the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association
(ACME).
Beyond the Pill Bottle: Alternative Arthritis Therapies -
Opening a pill bottle brings the promise of relief from pain for many people.
But for 41 percent of the 46 million Americans diagnosed with arthritis,
everyday activities -- like opening their arthritis medication -- can be very
difficult. Is it any wonder, then, that millions seek alternative ways to
enhance their doctor-prescribed drug
treatment?
S.F. AIDS funding likely spared budget knife - As his staff
puts the finishing touches on Mayor Gavin Newsom's proposed budget for next year
before releasing the tome Monday, one area has already been spared serious cuts:
AIDS programs. Newsom has flatly rejected a proposal by his public health
chief to slice $3 million out of the $10 million the department pays to about 30
nonprofits that provide services for AIDS patients. Public health
chief Dr. Mitch Katz, who treats AIDS patients at San Francisco General Hospital
when he's not running the city's biggest department, proposed maintaining funds
for AIDS patients' medical care and housing while zeroing out money for food
deliveries, legal services, support groups, acupuncture, massage and herbal
therapy.

Clinton Avoids Opponents' Discussion on Iraq; Focuses on Tribal
Issues - ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: While Sens. John McCain and Barack
Obama went back and forth about Iraq, Sen. Hillary Clinton largely avoided both
of her opponents and traveled to Pablo, Mont., to "reaffirm her support for
tribal sovereignty and her respect for the government to government relationship
between the tribes of Montana and the federal government," according to a
release provided by the campaign. Clinton's first campaign event of the day
began at 6:30 p.m. ET in a picturesque setting admid trees and mountains.
Clinton also said that she thinks acupuncture should be included in the health
care plan she will provide. "I believe there are many treatments and
remedies should be included in the universal health care plan and you mentioned
one of them -- acupuncture," she
said.
