From The Editor

From the Editor:

Cheers all and welcome to the end of the warm weather.

I finally was able to face it myself and bought some new long underwear from LL Bean.  I figure just because the ground gets cold and there's a nip in the air doesn't mean I have to completely hole up like some kind of rodent.  I will try to enjoy the winter and do what I would do normally in nice weather with just more layers.

Thankfully it doesn't often snow in the PNW and I think most golf courses lower their rates for the die-hard whackos freezing their noses off while smacking a little white (or pink) ball around. It's all good.

Well I do sincerely hope that you'll all enjoy the changing of the season and find a few seconds to appreciate the wonderful color show nature puts on for us.

And the news this week, of course.  I hope you enjoy that as well.

Keep warm!

  News of Interest!

Acupuncture Taking The Pressure Off Today's Emotional Stresses - The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) has found that more people are turning to traditional acupuncture to alleviate symptoms caused by the emotional strains of everyday life. A recent survey reveals that the tolls of the 21st century are affecting younger people with under-40s seeking traditional acupuncture treatment for emotional issues such as depression, stress and anxiety. 57% of those citing emotional issues are under 40 - a third of who are men - with Londoners representing the highest proportion of sufferers than elsewhere in the UK.

IGNOU launches online diploma in Acupuncture - The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) yesterday launched a new programme in the field of Acupuncture in collaboration with the Institute of Acupuncture & Natural Medicines (IANM), New Delhi.  IGNOU Vice Chancellor Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai announced that the programme will commence from November this year. "The course is intended to strengthen the Acupuncture in general. It shall help graduates of different system of medicine to learn a new modality of therapy and utilize it for patient benefit in treating acute and chronic diseases", Prof. Pillai added.

Some men choose to wait the disease out - Peter Bentey remembers the fear that struck him when the doctor delivered the diagnosis of prostate cancer. ``Was I scared? Absolutely. This is cancer,' he said.  His urologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York recommended surgery. His New Jersey doctor concurred. So did a Staten Island urologist. A date for the operation was set. Bentey was 54.

Acupressure seen to calm children before surgery - Acupressure helps calm anxious children right before they get anesthesia for surgery, without the nausea and other side-effects caused by sedatives, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.  Taping an acupressure bead between the eyebrows reduced anxiety noticeably in the children, compared to a similar sham treatment, Dr. Zeev Kain of the University of California Irvine and colleagues reported.  "Anxiety in children before surgery is bad because of the emotional toll on the child and parents, and this anxiety can lead to prolonged recovery and the increased use of analgesics for postoperative pain," Kain said in a statement.

Breast Cancer Survivors Find Relief In Acupuncture - Hot flashes, nausea, and fatigue are just some of the debilitating side effects associated with breast cancer treatments. Now a new study shows that acupuncture can ease these symptoms in some women. Doctors at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit conducted a study comparing acupuncture to drug therapy for the treatment of these side effects.
