Happy Black Friday everyone and hope your Thanksgiving was fantastic too!
I always plan to stay as far away from any shopping center today. I'm not one who loves the struggle, push, and blatant consumerism of the holidays so I am at work trying to keep my world normal. Well, and you know someone has to answer the phone if it rings. :
You might notice that I did leave out one big acupuncture story. I assure you that I did it on purpose. But if you Google Jennifer Aniston and Acupuncture you will find a glut of news articles on how the diva is trying to get pregnant and using acupuncture to help her in that goal. I have to admit that I'm just absolutely tired of seeing her name in the news and just couldn't face it again. So feel free to search it if you're interested in the news but I can't give her any more face time.
I do hope you have a wonderful weekend and that we happened to feed your interest in a little acupuncture news of the week. Please feel free to drop me a note anytime.

A young man named John received a parrot as an early Christmas gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and shoved him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued.....'May I inquire as to what the turkey did?'

News of Interest!
Study confirms patient's mind a key factor in treatment - A
team led by Dr. Ted J. Kaptchuk at Harvard set out to investigate what it called
the "components" of the placebo effect. The researchers decided to study
patients with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, a common condition
previously shown to be quite responsive to placebos. Their placebo was not a
sugar pill but something quite different -- sham acupuncture. They had devised a
set of needles that appeared to be stuck into the skin but actually did not
penetrate. Rangers' Scott Gomez gets acupuncture to treat injury -
Acupuncture is on the regime as New York Rangers center Scott Gomez tries to
recover from a bum ankle and sore groin. The point of this needling is to get
Gomez ready to play, and it appears he might return Monday when the Rangers meet
the Phoenix Coyotes. There are conflicting reports on the ankle injury, which
most sources say is a deep bruise from blocking a shot in Detroit on Oct. 18.
One source says Gomez has a stress fracture. He played with the injury until
pain from that injury and a sore groin forced him out of the lineup.
Nonprofits Coordinate Support Services for Small Businesses -
Eleven years ago, Gail Brent's dream of starting her own acupuncture and massage
business nearly faltered for the same reasons that hold true today. Back then,
as a 45-year-old single mother with tarnished credit and student loans acquired
for her master's degree as an acupuncturist, her case presented a nightmare for
traditional lenders.A friend referred Brent to Accion San Diego, a nonprofit
that provides entrepreneurs turned down by traditional lenders with loans
ranging from $300 to $35,000. Accion granted Brent a $5,000 loan, enough to buy
equipment, print business cards and brochures, and open Health and Vision
Acupuncture and Massage Center in Bay
Park.
New acupuncture medical journal - The British Medical Journal
(BMJ) Group has announced plans to publish a medical journal on acupuncture, the
first complementary medicine title that the BMJ Group has published. Acupuncture
in Medicine, to be published quarterly beginning in January, aims to build the
evidence base for acupuncture. It is currently self-published by the British
Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS). Acupuncture gains an edge by relaxing fees - Gene Burgess
takes the thumb-length needle in his hand and with a delicate spinning motion
inserts it into the left forearm of a 50-ish female patient&.Her cost for
the day's therapy? Whatever she wanted to pay. Sarasota Community Acupuncture
charges on a sliding scale, setting fees based on the patient's income. But the
practitioners do not ask for W-2 forms or paystubs, making their fee structure
in essence an honor system. But in a free-falling economy the pay-what-you-can
approach has new relevance.
Doctor uses acupuncture to address children's medical needs -
At first, the needles may seem scary to children, while parents may not be
convinced that an ancient Chinese treatment will help with their child's
problem. But a doctor practicing at Children's Hospital says the treatment is
not only changing children's minds, but healing their bodies as
well.
